Values and Approach
I believe good writing requires good thinking. Before you can write well, you have to figure out what it is that you think. You need to practice putting those thoughts into words, and then to share your insights with someone who will listen. In my career as a high school English teacher and reading interventionist, I have had the privilege of being a part of many spirited conversations with my students. I have been struck time and again by how thoughtful and insightful teens are when they are in an environment in which they feel safe to share what is important to them.
As a teacher of writing, I understand my role to be that of a guide. I want to know what is interesting to you, and to leverage your interests and knowledge to support you in your development as a thinker and writer. Together, we will build on the skills you already have to develop personal statements and resumes that are clear, captivating, and reflective of your voice as a writer. We will begin by developing your writing process, craft your story through revisions and multiple drafts, and end with a finished product of which you are proud.
My style is warm, consistent, and firm. I believe in the importance of setting high expectations, and I will always provide you with the individualized support you need so you can feel successful. That being said, I do believe some element of "productive struggle" is necessary for students to be successful readers and writers–you are the only one who knows what you’re passionate about, and I’m not going to put words in your mouth. I won’t let you struggle alone, though–I am attentive and compassionate, and will step in with guidance when you need it.
I have been lucky enough to build strong and lasting relationships with many of my students, several of whom I have mentored through high school, college, and into their first jobs. I care deeply about the students I have taught, and am honored to offer my guidance during this important time in life. Beyond my time as a high school English teacher, I was trained as a middle and high school reading interventionist and am highly skilled at providing the necessary support to ensure students who have historically had literacy difficulty can be successful and confident readers and writers.
